You may have heard of an inspirational self-help movie called The Secret.
You may have also heard of the book with the same name.
They were featured on "The Oprah Winfrey Show," "The Ellen De Generes Show" and "Larry King Live." This kind of exposure, of course, virtually guaranteed the mega success of the film and book.
However, The Secret was already a hugely profitable Internet marketing campaign long before Oprah Winfrey got wind of it in 2007. One estimate puts the revenues from online downloads alone in 2006 at $20 million.
Not only that, the information presented in this blockbuster documentary film was not "secret" at all. Every element of its message had been available for at least 100 years. Books that fully revealed this "secret" in every detail could be found in bookstores and libraries the world over.
Somehow, Rhonda Byrne, a moderately successful and, at the time, deeply depressed Australian television producer, turned a widely published insight up for grabs in the public domain into a global marketing extravaganza. In the process, she became a millionaire many times over, launched a The Secret multimedia publishing empire, and boosted the careers of dozens of success coaches and self-help experts.
